Climate warming in the Arctic is occurring at a rate more than twice the global average. This rapid change in climate has direct impacts on the thermal and physical condition of permafrost and hydrological processes in Arctic watersheds. These changing conditions are driving changes in many biogeochemical processes and thus the fate and transport of material from terrestrial to freshwater systems. This session invites submissions from studies that examine how, and what, combination of changing permafrost and hydrological conditions impact the biogeochemical cycling, composition and fluxes of materials (e.g. particularly carbon, nutrients, contaminants, and sediment), and that consider the implications of these biogeochemical responses for water quality and aquatic ecosystem function.
